Policy and Advocacy Work Overview

The Public Policy Committee of Self-Advocates As Leaders is made up of individuals who want to get political. Members from communities all over the state meet to take action on issues that are effecting people with developmental disabilities.

Team Focus

We set goals for impacting policy for Oregonians with disabilities.

The goals for 2007-2008 have included:

Goal 1: Increase SAAL's legislative activity by providing training and supporting members to have their voices heard at the capitol.

Goal 2:Monitor whether Self Directed Support Services for adults is working for people.

Goal 3: Keep up with system change issues through active participation on statewide policy boards.

Goal 4: Identify policy issues that are important to people with developmental disabilities in Oregon. Address these policy issues by creating position statements and white papers that inform the public about the views of SAAL.

Goal 5: Distribute SAAL white papers and position statements to people and organizations.

Goal 6:Promote inclusion of self-advocacy leaders on local boards and committees by serving as a resource from connecting potential members with community agencies.

Team Jobs

We make sure those goals are met by acting as a group or assigning jobs to community members.
Be responsive to what's happening around us. If an issue comes up in Oregon or nationally, we have to decide if SAAL should take a position on it.
